The Icos Sustainability Challenge 2018 – Sustainable Water Challenge

Sustainable Water Solutions Challenge

Water scarcity, poor water quality and inadequate sanitation negatively impact food security, livelihood choices and opportunities across the world. Drought afflicts some of the world’s poorest countries, worsening hunger and malnutrition. By 2050, at least one in four people is likely to live in a country affected by chronic or recurring shortages of fresh water.

Water is also a critical medium for process industries, such as (agri-)food and chemicals. Here it is substantially driven by capex intensive solutions that include the use of chemicals. This industry is one of the heaviest consumers of energy.

What is needed are sustainable solutions achieved through the development of low capex, low energy usage and, low chemical usage technologies, which address the current food & chemical industry.

Icos Capital and its corporate partners seek high impact technology innovations for;

-Waste water processing using microbial and/or enzymatic technologies;
-Separation technologies to address chemical streams
-Reduction or prevention in bio-fouling
-Phosphate recovery technologies
-Zero liquid discharge technologies for industrial processes

What do we think successful solutions look like & which criteria should be met?
-Companies with developed solutions and launching customers
-Early growth / scale-up phase companies
-Solutions should not require significant change in customer environment
-Minimal capex
-Visible order of magnitude impact on cost, performance and sustainability
