The Photanol® technology is fundamentally the most efficient bio based production method to convert CO2 directly into valuable organic compounds such as terpenes, low calorie sugars, bioplastics, biofuels, essential oils and many others. The only byproduct formed is oxygen.
The Photanol-concept uses engineered cyanobacteria that turn CO2 directly and efficiently into predetermined products when exposed to light. By genetically introducing properties of fermentative bacteria into these cyanobacteria, the Photanol technology enables these bacteria to produce and excrete valuable compounds.
This CO2-consuming process is based on circular economy principles and is truly sustainable, widely applicable and independent of food economy.
After successfully building a pilot plant in 2012, Photanol is now preparing to up-scale the production of terpenes and low calorie sugars in greenhouse.
The Photanol® has developed a truly disruptive technology platform with the potential to produce a broad range of chemical compounds. In the process CO2 is consumed and the only by-product is oxygen. The Photanol process is not only simple and cheap, but is also more sustainable than classical fermentative technologies: it is 40 times more efficient in terms of land use and 10.000 times more efficient in terms of water use compared to technologies based on fermentation.
